We recently read the book The Sweet Smell of Christmas, which is a cute book about all the scents you smell at Christmastime. It has 6 pages with scratch-n-sniff stickers on them that make the book a smelly-goody fun time! My 4 year old preschooler is crazy for this book. It's really her first experience with scratch-n-sniff, as a concept so it was really fun to see her excitement.

I thought it would be fun to do some activities based on the book. We started with some scented play dough and moved onto this scented, taste safe cloud dough.

Scented Taste Safe Cloud Dough Recipes

Cloud dough starts with flour or corn starch so for each of the three scents we started with 1 cup of corn starch and 2 tablespoons vegetable oil. To make scents or flavors that corresponded to the scents in the book.

Apple Pie– Add 2 tablespoons to 1/4 cup of apple cider. Add a dash of cinnamon and mix to combine. Set out a ramekin or small dish to be used as a pie dish.

Cocoa- Add 2-4 tablespoons of cocoa powder depending on your preference. Once incorporated, add water slowly, 1-2 tablespoons at a time until you reach a consistency that will clump together when you squeeze it in your hand. Set it out with a small play mug or espresso mug.

Candy Cane- Crush up 1-2 peppermint candy canes to a fine powder. Add this to 2 tablespoons of warm water, mixing to dissolve some of the candy. Add the mixture to the corn starch and oil and add additional water as needed until it reaches a moldable texture. Set it out with a candy cane shaped cookie cutter.

You are all ready to play! you can see what it looks like when first laid out above. Below you can see what it looks like after being played with for a while! It turned out kind of Neapolitan looking!
