Free Printable Goodnight Moon Book Words & Letters Fine Motor Activity for kids - cute book extension activity!

We have read Goodnight Moon about a billion times and it has always been on the night stand to help the kids say goodnight after a busy day. When I saw that this month's featured author was Margaret Wise Brown, I knew this was the title that would be most familiar with kids.

We did peruse some of her other titles at the library and one that came home with us and has already been renewed once is Two Little Trains. My toddler is in love with this book and has requested it multiple times each day. In fact, when we walk out to the garage each day he pretends to be a train and says little snippets from the book. ADORBS!

Turning to this month's activity, I really love the way it turned out. It is pretty similar to our I Know an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly printable activity but this time we had the actual book that the activity is based on so it could be part of the action.

It is nice that this activity can be used with my two years old son to practice visual scanning and fine motor skills, and also with my four year old daughter to work on those skills as well as letter sounds and sounding out words. They both used the picture caps for some story retelling as well!

The printable was made using lovely clip art from Little Red's Schoolhouse and the Avery Labels Design Studio, which is a free online tool. Since it is laid out so nicely in a template form you can choose to either print onto paper and use a paper punch to cut the circles out or you can print right onto round sticker labels!

Directions:

Print your printable and allow it to dry. If you used Avery Labels, peel and stick them onto the bottle caps. If you used paper, punch each circle out with your one inch punch. (Tip: Turn your paper punch upside down to be able to see that you are lining up the paper punch with the printed circle!) Use the glue stick to glue them to your plastic caps. Allow the glue to dry.

For the wipes box bed, cut a small rectangle of white felt for the pillow and a larger rectangle of green felt for the blanket. If you want the felt to be stuck forever, go ahead and hot glue the pillow to the edge of the wipes box and the blanket to the flip up lid of the wipes box. If you might use that wipes box for something else, go ahead and use glue stick.

Ways to Play:

-Read the story and as you come across the pictures on the caps and say good night, tuck them into the bed to say goodnight! Grasping the caps and posting them into the wipes box is great fine motor skills practice!

-Read the story and have your child place the picture caps over the corresponding images in the book, as in the picture at the top of the post. This is great for visual scanning and matching.

-Read the story and hand your child pick out the cap with the correct beginning sound of each word and match it up with the pictures as you go.

-Let your older child read the story and pick out the full words to match up with the book or the corresponding picture caps.

-Without the book you can still match the picture caps with their beginning sounds or the full word caps!
