My daughter is starting to sound out words at school and we are really pleasantly surprised at how it is coming along for her. She likes reading books together and helping by sounding out words as we go. One night LalyDad explained that as she practices reading more and more there will be lots of words that she doesn't even need to sound out- she will just remember them by looking at them.

It got me thinking we aught to start working on word repetition and sight words more. We read a beginning reader Rapunzel reader together the other day and we focused on spotting the word “color,” which appeared on almost every page. Each time we turned the page we first took our time to try to spot the word and then we went back to the beginning of the page to read the words.

She totally caught on right away and I loved how excited she was to find the word on each page.

So when I was thinking about activities for this month's Virtual Book Club for Kids I thought it would be fun to come up with an idea that allowed her to find a word but something that was a little easier than a standard word find puzzle. This word cloud activity is just the right level for her.

Although I made this for my beginning reader, you could also use this with kids at a higher reading level and instead of tallying the words, you could tally verbs versus nouns.

All you need to do for this activity is print the free activity sheets (available in the Free Printables Section of the Lalymom shop) and when the ink is dry, cut them in half. There are two pages, each with two work cloud worksheets. This means you have four different word clouds to work with. You could have each child do all four, or print a few copies and mix it up for a group of kids.

The directions are right on each worksheet but the way you use these is to look through the word cloud, find a word, strike through the word (draw a line through it) and then make a tally mark in the space below next to that word. So I'd see the word milk in the word cloud, draw a line through it, then tally one next to milk at the bottom. Make sense? Hope so! Let me know if you have any questions!

  1. Hi, just wanted to say thanks so much for this idea. My class of 1st and 2nd graders loved it. They thought it was going to be really easy, but then discovered they miscounted almost every time!
