Snack Hunt Fine Motor Activity for Kids
We are back for Fine Motor Fridays this week with our growing group of blogger buddies! This week I've got a Super Simple Fine Motor Activity that could be set up in a snap for toddlers, preschoolers and even school kids, just for fun! You can use anything you have on hand, you can adjust it to your child's abilities AND it involves your kid's favorite snack foods! Bonus!
Snack Hunt for Hand & Finger Strength and Pincer Grasp Practice
Materials
Snacks (dry snacks and uncut fruit work best)
Various containers (Think lunch containers but also recycled fruit and egg cartons, storage containers, zip top bags, screw top lids, Easter eggs and more. You could also practice using a lunch box and any other gear your child may use at school.)
Are you ready for this? Really complicated instructions:
1. Place your kid's favorite snacks into various containers, closing the lids.
2. Put the containers in front of kids if you just want to focus on fine motor skills. For added fun arrange the containers around the room or back yard. (Just be sure you know how many you hid so none get left behind!)
3. Tell them it's time for a snack hunt!
Done! See, SO complicated!
This low-prep fine motor activity offers life skills practice and, depending on the containers you have on hand, could include twisting, prying and lifting.
This is great for working on hand and finger strength as well as thumb flexion. Not to mention getting those little snacks out of the containers works on that all-important pincer grasp!
If your kids are getting ready to start school and will have to pack a lunch, this is a perfect school readiness activity to help them learn to open their food packages on their own.
You COULD also sing We're going on a Snack Hunt, to the tune of Bear Hunt, and make up silly words as you go. Here is a silly start for you. I'm going to make it up as I go and see how it goes. You're TOTALLY welcome! 😉
We're going on a Snack Hunt
We're going on a snack hunt.
Gonna find a big one!
We're not scared.
It's a beautiful day!
Oh look, a snack cup! Shake, shake, shake!
We can't eat the lid, we can't eat the bottom
Ohhh NO!
We gotta lift the lid!
Lift, lift, lift, lift!
Oh look, a jar! Tap, tap, tap the glass!
We can't eat the glass, we can't eat the lid!
Ohhh NO!
We gotta twist the lid!
Twist, twist, twist, twist!
Oh look, an egg carton! Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle!
We can't eat it this way, we can't eat it that way!
Ohhh NO!
We gotta pry it open!
Pry, pry, pry, pry!
See, now aren't you excited to go on your own snack hunt?! You might recognize some of these containers from our Grocery Store Play post, which we are still playing with pretty regularly!

How cute! And I know Caden would be totally motivated to find the snacks!
I *love* the song to go with it! Totally have that going around my head now!
This post cracked me up! The song is adorable and the instructions are so simple. Fun stuff, Laura!
This is a great everyday idea and I’m loving the song!
Live the song, too!! So fun and love this practical idea! As parents we often just want to do everything for our kids as its easier/ faster, but our kiddos miss out on so much learning when we do that! this is such a fun spin on ordinary practical/fine motor skills!!
This is such a fun idea to incorporate fine motor practice into your child’s day. I love it! I found this post at the Kids co-op. I would love it if you shared a post at my new link-up: http://www.joyfocusedlearning.com/2013/11/anything-goes-link-up-1.html
