What is Noom?

If Noom is new to you, let me give the quick run-down of what Noom is.

Noom is a popular weight loss app featuring a healthy habits program.

There are a MILLION weight loss apps these days though, so what makes Noom different?

This MOST IMPORTANT part of Noom is the short, daily snippets that make up their behavior modification program. These short, easy readings and quizzes help you break unhealthy habits and build new ones.

Noom helps you develop a healthy lifestyle, one step at a time. It is not like a low-carb diet, where you instantly change the foods you eat, overnight, and lose weight as long as you stick to the list of low carb foods.

Instead you start right where you are, logging the food you currently eat, and learn over time to eat a more balanced diet as well as how to break free from unhealthy habits.

The weight loss obstacles & habits that noom addresses includes:

  • Binge eating
  • Stress Eating
  • Mindless Eating
  • Social Eating

Because you can follow any diet, or take any shake or pill, but unless you fix your unhealthy habits, you are just on a short term diet. You will never have a long term healthy lifestyle.

You can binge eat zero points foods on WW (Weight Watchers).

You can stress eat low-carb foods on a keto diet.

You can even mindlessly eat Noom Green Foods.

In order to make lasting change you need to change your habits. That is what a paid subscription to Noom is all about.

The Noom app does this with the following features of the paid app:

  • Short, Psychology Based, Habit-Fixing Lessons & Quizzes
  • A Weekly Check-In with a Goal Specialist (AKA your coach)
  • Moderated Discussion and Support with a group of fellow Noomers
  • Color Coded Food Logging (details below)
  • Healthy Recipe Database

These are the features of the Paid Noom Weight Loss Subscription. (Very similar to Noom's Diabetes Prevention Program.)

Is there a free version of Noom? Yes, technically, but you lose the features that actually matter: After completing your program and canceling your subscription, if you don't delete the app, you still have access to it for free, to use the food logging and weight logging. The lessons, coach, recipes and group are gone. In other words the really life changing part, the habit change lessons, are gone.

As discussed above, until you fix your unhealthy habits, food logging alone will not help most people lose weight so you need to do the paid program first.

How Much Does Noom Cost Each Month?

Wondering how much Noom costs? Well it depends. Let's break it down. You can see the breakdown below or here on the Noom Cost Website.

First of all, you need to take the Noom Customized Weight Loss Program Quiz to determine how many months it should take to reach your weight loss goal.

Noom subscriptions are billed every # of months that you sign up for, as a big chunk, but if you do the math, you can see that the monthly cost goes down as you commit to more months.

The current Noom plans as of 2024 are as follows,

  • Monthly auto-renewing plan for $70 USD
  • 2-month auto-renewing plan for $129 USD
  • 3-month auto-renewing plan for $159 USD
  • 4-month auto-renewing plan for $169 USD
  • 5-month auto-renewing plan for $174 USD
  • 6-month auto-renewing plan for $179 USD
  • 7-month auto-renewing plan for $184 USD
  • 8-month auto-renewing plan for $189 USD
  • 9-month auto-renewing plan for $195 USD
  • 10-month auto-renewing plan for $199 USD
  • 11-month auto-renewing plan for $205 USD
  • Annual auto-renewing plan for $209 USD

SO, the cheapest monthly Noom subscription overall is the one year plan. But if that is not what you need, based on the quiz, then the total cost of a shorter program will obviously be lower.

Listen Up.

When I started Noom, I was one pound from the heaviest weight I'd ever been. I was spending more than the monthly cost of Noom on junk food and alcohol, easy. I was done though. I could not stand to gain one more pound. I wouldn't even let myself think of the first week as a trial.

I joined, paid and got started on Noom, like my life depended on it. Are you ready, too?

But, What is the Noom Diet?

If you're wondering what you're “supposed to eat” when you are doing Noom, sorry to disappoint you. There is no prescribed specific “Noom Diet Plan” as far as specific foods to eat.

You pick the foods you eat, nothing is required, nothing is off limits.

Are you supposed to eat more fruits and vegetables? Yep. Are you supposed to cut back on junk food? Yep again.

The foods you are encouraged to eat more of on Noom will not come as a surprise.

We all think we “know” what healthy food is. It's the part about following through on those healthy eating habits that is so hard. That's what Noom teaches in the daily lessons, using cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) techniques.

But okay, okay, you really want to know what is the Noom Diet?

When you are logging your food on Noom, they use a red, yellow, green category system as a part of your daily calorie budget, to help you work towards a more balanced diet.

Very Loosely, the Noom Colors Represent the Following (But there are thousands of foods in the food database):

  • Noom Green Foods – Many fruits, vegetables, whole grains, non-fat dairy & cheese.
  • Noom Yellow Foods – Many Lean Proteins, eggs, low-fat dairy & cheese, starches that are not whole grain.
  • Noom Red Foods – Many Condiments, junk foods, desserts, fried foods, high fat proteins, full-fat dairy & cheese.

Rather than just a straight calorie count, the Noom Healthy Weight Program gives you a recommended ratio of red, yellow and green foods to aim for each day.

You may think Noom Red Foods are off limits, but they are not. There are red calories included in every single day.

This was actually incredible once I understood the beauty of this. Check out my Noom Red Foods Article to understand this complete mindset shift I experienced about desserts and junk food.

Who Are Noom Coaches and What Do Noom Coaches Do?

Noom Coaches, or Goal Specialists as they are called now, come from a variety of backgrounds but will be someone with a degree in wellness, as well as 2000 hours of wellness practice.

This means it is not someone who completed the program but has no other training. It means you are talking to a personal trainer, registered dietitian, nutritionist or other health specialist.

In addition to the education required to join the team, Noom coaches can participate in Noom’s Health Coach Certification Program.

When Noom first launched it was called Noom Coach, and I think a lot of people were expecting the program to include a fully available, 24/7 person to tell you what to eat and how to exercise.

This is NOT what the Coach, now called a Goal Specialist, was ever meant to be.

The main purpose is to help you set weekly goals, encourage you, and help you be accountable to reach those goals. The goal could be, “I want to add a fruit to my breakfast every day this week,” or “I want to go for a walk on my lunch break 3 time this week,” or any specific, measurable goal to help get you where you want to be.

Can they answer questions? Of course! Can they make food recommendations? Sure! But they are not going to be prescribing a full meal plan each week, or chiming in on ever meal.

That said, you get what you put into this program.

If you never engage with your Goal Specialist or Group, you will not get anything out of those features that you are paying for.

If you never read the daily lessons, never really inspect your own habits and obstacles, then I don't know why you're paying for this program.

If you want to lead a healthy lifestyle, this app really can help. If you are willing to read the short, daily lessons, really look at your current habits and really engage with the Goal Specialist, it can really be life changing.

Or you could change nothing, and nothing will change. Your call.
