I know SOME of you who are new to bone broth might be wondering what the heck it is doing in a smoothie recipe, but anyone looking to add the health benefits of bone broth to your life will loooove this easy, delicious way to sneak it into your day.
Now, I am one of those people who enjoys broth as a warming, savory drink- basically an alternative to tea.
LalyDad loves to cook on his days off, and he will make a day of smoking chicken, making a big dinner, and then making broth for us for the week, or to freeze. He went through a phase of doing this almost every weekend for a while.
I was in HEAVEN.
We'd have broth based soups, chicken and dumplings, or one of our family favorites- Amish noodles cooked in bone broth. We LOVE how the noodles soak up all that flavor.
I was browsing bone broth recipes recently, pinning delicious recipes like a mad-woman, when I ran across this recipe for bone broth smoothies.
SCREEECH! What?! Bone broth?! In Smoothies!?
My kids and I have fruit smoothies together almost every day. In fact, a quick peanut butter and jelly smoothie is a family favorite. They're simple to toss together and it's a yummy way to get fruits and veg down the hatch.
I'm always looking for new, healthy smoothie ingredients and our kids are up for anything. On any given day we might add chia seeds, oats, spinach, kale, ginger, cucumber or some random produce I had left from last night's dinner.
So bone broth smoothies really caught my attention. There are so many health benefits of Bone Broth that I knew I had to try adding this powerhouse ingredient to our next peanut butter and jelly smoothie.
Since LalyDad is past his cook-bone-broth-all-day phase, I'm trying out organic, fresh chicken broth from Kettle & Fire.
I had a chance to sample their various bone broths and found them to be all sooo savory, rich and delicious, whether I sipped them like tea or added them to recipes.
I buzzed up the recipe below with our immersion blender, wondering how the bone broth ice cubes would change the taste. I was surprised to see how it added a slight savory flavor to round out the sweet and salty PB&J smoothie flavor. It was very mild but really gave it a an awesome depth of flavor.
Of course the real test was having my kids try the bone broth peanut butter and jelly smoothie! My daughter noted that it tasted “a little different.” I asked “good different or bad different?” She responded with a resounding “OH! It's AWESOME different!”
So there you have it. Awesome different.
